COCHLEAR IMPLANT Cochlear Implantation is now an established clinical procedure to help profoundly and severely deaf individuals, both in adults and children to hear and communicate. This benefit has not reached vast majority of children who are born deaf in developing countries such as India due to prohibitive cost of these implants.
Development of an indigenous cochlear prosthesis for the benefit of profoundly deaf people was taken up under the aegis of SBMT. The system consists of body worn processor, implant electronics and an electrode array. The entire system is completed and the indigenously developed Cochlear Implants are now being readied for human trials to prove safety and efficacy. Subsequently, technology will be available for transfer to suitable industry for commercial production.
