DEEP BRAIN STIMULATOR Deep brain stimulation is a method to treat neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and similar movement disorders which are increasing in prevalence especially in the aging population. The project was taken up at Naval Science & Technologica Laboratory (NSTL), DRDO, Vizag, to develop a battery operated device called neuro-stimulator which can be surgically implanted to deliver electrical stimulation to targeted areas in the brain that control the movements. Bench-model has been developed and technology was demonstrated successfully to user neurosurgeons. Limited series production of DBS prototypes are planned to evaluate its safety and efficacy through clinical trials.
Subsequently the technology will be made available to suitable industry for commercial production.
