TRANS-FEMORAL PROSTHESIS Trans-femoral or above-knee (A/K) amputation, which occurs through the thigh, is a very common type of amputation carried out in clinical practice. Typical causes leading to amputation include diabetes, vascular disease and road accidents. A person who undergoes an A/K amputation requires an artificial limb (prosthesis) to stand and walk. The complexity of this amputation is that the prosthesis user now has to control the artificial limb by means of the strength in the residual limb alone.
As there is a huge demand for such prostheses which is affordable to the general population, a four bar linkage trans-femoral prosthesis that will significantly improve the efficiency and gait pattern of the amputee has been completed.
Technology is available for transfer to industry to take up commercial production.
